Thanks, guys!

The tricky part of writing this was to leave enough clues to what was going on, yet not give it away until very near the end. I ended up tweaking several sentences throughout the story until I was satisfied.

Joachim— I need to read more Alastair Reynolds! I've only read his first book so far. I did drop in references to "2001", "Buckaroo Banzai" and "Memento"; and other stories that contributed to the mood were Fritz Leiber's "A Pail Of Air" and J.G. Ballard's "Thirteen For Centaurus".

Ah! Fantastic. This is beautiful. I didn't actually realize what it meant until it said "Mars, sir", and suddenly the rest of the story made a different kind of sense, especially opening the door! This reminded me of the Generation Ships of Alastair Reynold's series (maybe in Chasm City?); a journey so long that at last its very reason is both forgotten and irrelevant.
