Please wave “hello”!
October 7th, 2006 by jens

I always find this “blog” thing weird because, unlike more-centralized social network services, there’s not an inbuilt sense of community. This is simply a black box into which I type words, and they pop out on a page, and someone might or might not be paying attention. It makes me feel like I’m Helen Keller standing on a soapbox.

I know there are services that help you find out who’s writing about you [_centralized_ services … so much for blogging as a distributed platform.] So I’m getting myself all signed up with those, in anticipation of nervously re-checking my blog rank every 15 minutes.

But it’s not the same as comments. Comments are the spare change of the attention economy. There is no one so rich they don’t get a thrill out of finding a quarter on the street. To continue the strained analogy above, it’s like I’m holding a hat in my hand as I lecture/declaim/narrate/confess from my soapbox, and I feel the little clinks of the coins falling in and it’s like they’re spelling I hear you, you’re interesting into my palm.

Therefore, I am asking of you reading this that you please comment on this post. Just a quick “Hi, I read your blog”, like a wave or passing-in-the-hallway smile. Thanks.

PS: For the occasion, I’ve enabled OpenID authentication for comments. If you have a LiveJournal or TypePad account, or another form of OpenID, you can just enter it in the comment form.

I came here via Daring Fireball to your post on Java on the iPhone, and subscribed based on that. I’ve just enjoyed your post on Inform 7, and been freaked out (in a good way) by Oxygen.

    Hi Jens,

Your blog didn’t used to be a regular stop on my rounds, because you posted irregularly —- but now I see you’ve got an RSS feed, so that problem’s solved!

    Greetings,

Found your entry on “Lua and unique strings” interesting and kept wandering through… you have a nice site. The horizontal scroll is a nice change and the warm colors, dead-simple chioces makes for focus and simple ragged-edged graphics reinforces an appreciation for natural minimalism I find in your verbiage, too.

Like you have written, I also needed to put aside the blog-thang for a time, but I am heating up again with pent-up demand and look forward to revitalized presence.

    I’ll check in periodically.

    Cheers,
    - Jonathan ‘the ArchiTXT’ Gibson -

As a little kibble, smaller boxes of text on the front page would force a scroll-wheel or cursor click to your window to automagically default ones’ moves in the horizontal. Minor suggestion on a good site.

Yea., just found your blog. I was directed because of your rants on java. I am now in what I term java development hell. Say what you want about .net, but I can develop 100 times faster and actually debug it. Maybe flex will save java.

Hello Jens… greetings from ‘another ex-big-A’ person. Different ‘A’ tho’… of course I found you via the ‘Going Indie’ article…. top notch.

The thing that I found most upsetting is that you worked on projects and the work wasn’t used. This is upsetting because I think you’re the most creative, excellent, of programmers, way ahead of your time. So, your work should have brought Apple to new levels of innovation. That you worked so hard and each time the work was discarded, is so distressing to hear. Of course, your decision was right. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what you create independently. I know it will be a great contribution to the Apple community. Heck, in a couple of years, Apple will probably offer to buy you out.

My best wishes to you and your family.

    Hi,

Lovely layout & use of horizontal scrolling (which I am usually not a fan of).

None of my neighbors ever wave hello and it really hacks me off. So your point is well taken!

So here’s my HOWDY from Texas :)
